Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has reached a key milestone in its non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement with Bayer AG, securing a $1 million payment from Bayer. The payment, announced on September 9, 2026, follows the approval of Voyageur's feasibility work plan by Bayer, which was submitted as part of the agreement dated February 10, 2026.
The Houston R&D team at Voyageur successfully demonstrated its proprietary Mueller iodine extraction process, achieving laboratory production of 99.8% purity iodine from produced water sourced from the Anadarko Basin. This technical validation was crucial for Bayer to advance the program. With the pilot plant nearing completion and scheduled to begin field operations this fall, the first milestone payment has been released. This brings the total funds received from Bayer to $1.35 million, including the initial $350,000 paid in March 2026. The remaining $1 million will be paid upon completion of the feasibility study, which will be conducted by Fluor Corporation.
Brent Willis, President and CEO of Voyageur, emphasized the importance of this progress: "Achievement of this first milestone under our agreement with Bayer is an important step forward for Voyageur. It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs."
The funding supports continued feasibility work through 2026 and reflects progress toward establishing a domestic, high-purity iodine supply for Bayer's contrast drug manufacturing. Subject to successful completion, Bayer and Voyageur may negotiate a long-term offtake agreement. The project envisions 1,000 tonnes per year of iodine production, with a staged rollout beginning at 200 tonnes per year. If successful, Voyageur could expand capacity over time, potentially building a central manufacturing facility to produce USP-grade iodine for contrast drugs.
Fluor Corporation, a global engineering firm, has been providing engineering and project planning support. The subsequent phases, FEL-2 (Concept Design) and FEL-3 (Basic Design), are expected to take four to five months and seven to nine months respectively, refining the modular Field Unit plus Central Hub architecture.
This development is strategically significant for the contrast media market, which is estimated at approximately $7.06 billion. Voyageur's vertically integrated approach aims to enhance supply-chain security, reduce reliance on imported materials, and lower operating costs. As Willis noted, "Voyageur is focused on building multiple potential revenue streams through a staged commercialization strategy. This includes near-term opportunities from barium contrast sales, iodine sales under the Bayer collaboration, and longer-term opportunities from barium and iodine-based contrast drug sales."
