HOA Start Launches In-House Bookkeeping Service for Self-Managed Boards

HOA Start, a leading provider of homeowners association management software, has launched a new bookkeeping service designed to help self-managed boards maintain accurate financial records without relying on outside firms or volunteer treasurers. The service, announced July 15, 2026, integrates directly with the company's existing HOA software platform, which handles online payments, member communication, document storage, online voting, and community websites.

The move transforms HOA Start from a pure software provider into a combined software-and-services company, offering monthly bookkeeping directly for associations of any size. According to the company, many self-managed boards currently handle bookkeeping in one of three ways: through a property management company, an outside accounting firm, or a volunteer treasurer working on nights and weekends. Each approach comes with challenges, including inconsistent practices, high costs, and the risk of losing financial history when board members or property managers leave.

HOA Start Bookkeeping covers the full monthly financial cycle, including bank reconciliation, accounts receivable tracking (including processing fees for online dues collection), vendor accounts payable, reserve balance accounting, and the generation of balance sheets and profit-and-loss statements for board review and homeowner transparency. The monthly cadence provides treasurers with a current financial picture and reduces the time spent reconstructing records after turnover.

Pricing for the service typically ranges from one-third to one-half of what associations pay property managers or outside firms for comparable bookkeeping, making professional financial management more accessible for smaller or cost-sensitive boards. “HOA Start Bookkeeping has been an absolute pleasure to work with. The service is affordable, highly professional, and incredibly reliable. Our bookkeeper is engaged, personable, and truly invested in helping us stay organized and confident in our financials,” said Tyra Watts of LaPlace HOA.

Clayton Thompson, CEO of HOA Start, emphasized the strategic shift: “We started the year as a software company. We’re becoming a software-and-services company, and eventually a software, services, and solutions company. HOA boards are looking to hand off the work that pulls volunteers away from their communities. Bookkeeping is one of the clearest examples of that.”

The launch comes amid increasing regulatory pressure for financial transparency in homeowners associations. States such as Florida require associations under Florida Statutes 718 and 720 to keep financial records accessible to residents, and board members carry a fiduciary duty to manage funds responsibly. Accurate, current bookkeeping is essential to meeting these obligations, yet many self-managed boards struggle with manual processes.

HOA Start has indicated that additional financial services, including reserve planning support, are on its roadmap as it builds out a broader community association software and services offering. The company serves thousands of self-managed and community-managed associations nationwide.
