Estate of Leonard Bermudez Reopens the Artist's Legacy to a New Generation

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., the public will have the first opportunity in over a decade to view the work of California artist Leonard E. Bermudez (1943–2010) at The Braly at The Continental in Downtown Los Angeles. The event, part of DTLA ArtNight, marks the beginning of a renewed effort by his son, Edward Bermudez, to open the artist's estate and bring his father's paintings and sculptures back into public awareness.

Leonard Bermudez lived a life that spanned two seemingly disparate worlds: he was both a self-taught artist and an aerospace professional. He worked for Lockheed's Skunk Works as a tool designer, contributing to iconic programs like the SR-71 Blackbird and F-117 Stealth Fighter. According to his surviving biography, his artistic practice began in childhood, influenced by masters such as Salvador Dalí, Diego Rivera, Monet, Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. His work evolved through geometric abstraction, Cubism, Modernism, and Abstract Expressionism.

Central to Bermudez's art was his exploration of organic forms in nature, often rendered in chrome and polished metal. He called this visual world "Metallic Reflections," where reflective surfaces became active elements that changed with the viewer's perspective. His paintings frequently depicted his sculptures, translating their forms and reflections into two-dimensional compositions. This interplay between sculpture and painting, engineering and imagination, defined his distinctive body of work.

Despite his prolific output, much of Bermudez's art has remained out of public view since his death in 2010. However, surviving records show an active exhibition history spanning more than three decades. His documented exhibitions include the Lockheed Employee Art Shows (1968–1972), the San Fernando Valley Art Council's Symphony in Color, the Beverly Hills Art Show, Palm Springs Art Show, and others. By the 1990s, his solo exhibitions included "Illusions of Solidarity" (1995) and "Metallic Reflections" (1996) at Artspace in Woodland Hills. He also completed public art projects, such as the Unity Mural in Panorama Mall (1997) and the Freedom Mural at Pacoima Elementary (1999).

Edward Bermudez is now spearheading the effort to preserve and document his father's artistic legacy. The goal is not simply to sell artwork but to establish relationships with galleries, museums, curators, scholars, and collectors who can help contextualize Leonard's contributions. While some works may eventually be available for acquisition, the larger mission is to ensure the work is seen, studied, and appreciated.

The upcoming exhibition at The Braly at The Continental, part of DTLA ArtNight, offers a first glimpse into this legacy. DTLA ArtNight is a monthly cultural event that brings together more than 50 galleries, museums, and creative venues across Downtown Los Angeles. It provides an accessible way for Angelenos and visitors to experience the city's creative community. This September event will be a significant step in introducing Leonard Bermudez's work to a new generation, ensuring that his unique blend of art and aerospace engineering continues to inspire.

The presentation of Bermudez's work comes as the estate begins a broader outreach to cultural institutions and art professionals. For the local community and the art world, this is an opportunity to rediscover an artist whose dual career in aerospace and art offers a unique perspective on creativity and innovation. As the estate moves forward, it aims to establish Bermudez's place in the broader narrative of California art, bridging the worlds of technical precision and artistic expression.
