CICC Global Institute Debuts Quarterly Macro Forum in Southeast Asia, Spotlighting China's Economic Rebalancing

The CICC Global Institute (CGI) convened its 2026 Q4 Macro Forum in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 13, under the theme "China's Economy amid Global Rebalancing: New Paradigms and New Industries." The event, announced via Media OutReach Newswire, marked the first time the CGI Quarterly Macro Forum was held in Southeast Asia, signaling a strategic expansion of the institute's international dialogue platform. The forum featured welcome remarks, keynote speeches, two thematic dialogues, and an evening discussion session, drawing experts and industry representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the National University of Singapore, ICBC Standard Bank, Wood Mackenzie, and NSQ Capital.

Yanliang Miao, Chief Economist and Senior Managing Director of CICC, used his opening remarks and keynote speech to outline China's economic transformation and the evolving international monetary order. He emphasized that understanding China requires a global rebalancing perspective, one that weighs both the dynamism of emerging industries and the implications of shifting from old to new growth engines for jobs, incomes, and demand. Miao noted that alongside green and digital transitions, China is working toward a growth model supported by higher household incomes and services-led consumption. On the international monetary order, he observed that shifts in the global economy, trade networks, and financial technology are driving a more diversified international monetary system. He cautioned that economic and trade strength do not automatically translate into international currency status, stressing that institutional credibility and the depth and breadth of financial markets remain central to understanding this evolution and the internationalization of the renminbi.

Huimin Wu, Executive Dean of CICC Global Institute and Deputy Head of the Research Department at CICC, highlighted insights from The New Pattern of Dual Circulation, a book jointly published this year by CGI and CICC's Research Department. Wu noted that China's economy is entering a new stage of development, with its trade and outward investment undergoing a paradigm shift while emerging industries become increasingly important drivers of global growth. These changes, she explained, are both part of and deeply shaped by the broader process of global economic rebalancing, giving rise to a new pattern of interaction between China and the global economy.

The forum's discussions centered on the transformations of China's trade and outward investment and their global implications, as well as prospects for emerging industries such as innovative pharmaceuticals, green energy, and artificial intelligence. By convening during the week of the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, the event aimed to bring Chinese perspectives to the global conversation and offer Chinese insights on key issues of broad international interest.

For the Long Beach and surrounding California business community, the forum's emphasis on global rebalancing carries practical implications. The port complex of Long Beach and Los Angeles is a critical gateway for trans-Pacific trade, and shifts in China's trade and outward investment patterns can influence shipping volumes, logistics demand, and supply chain strategies. The rise of emerging industries in China, particularly green energy and artificial intelligence, may open new partnership and investment opportunities for California firms operating in those sectors. Additionally, the discussion of renminbi internationalization and a more diversified monetary system could affect currency risk management for importers, exporters, and financial institutions across the region. As CGI continues to deepen its international engagement, the dialogue initiated in Bangkok may serve as a bellwether for how Chinese economic transformation reshapes global trade and investment flows that directly touch Southern California's economy.
