The Keep A Breast Foundation has launched its 2024-2025 Give Back Grant Cycle 5, marking the fifth year of a program dedicated to supporting women of color who are breast cancer survivors or currently undergoing treatment. This year's cycle pledges $100,000 in grants, continuing the foundation's commitment to addressing the financial and emotional challenges faced by BIPOC women affected by breast cancer. Since its inception in 2020, the GBG program has become a vital resource for the BIPOC breast cancer community, having awarded 1,047 grants totaling $523,500. The program's significance is underscored by the fact that women of color face higher mortality rates upon breast cancer diagnosis compared to White women. By providing flexible financial support, the GBG program aims to alleviate some of the disparities in breast cancer outcomes and promote healing and resilience within the BIPOC community.
Shaney jo Darden, founder of Keep A Breast, emphasized the program's impact, stating that this money can be life-changing and stress-relieving, bringing peace and support during the breast cancer treatment and recovery experience. The unrestricted nature of the grants allows recipients to use the funds according to their personal needs, whether for medical bills, personal care, or pursuing passions that contribute to their overall well-being. The GBG program is made possible through key donations from partners Smart & Sassy and Curvy Couture, as well as generous contributions from one-time and recurring donors. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of community support in addressing health disparities and providing tangible assistance to those in need.
Marquita Goodluck, the GBG program manager and a past recipient, offers a unique perspective on the program's value, explaining that as both a breast cancer survivor and advocate, she understands the financial and emotional challenges that come long after active treatment ends. The Give Back Grant has been a beacon for BIPOC survivors, allowing them to feel seen, respected, and supported through their journey. Applications for the 2024 GBG cycle are open until December 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Eligible applicants include women of color in the U.S. who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have survived breast cancer. Each successful applicant will receive a $500 grant, which they can use at their discretion for essential expenses, restorative experiences, or personal projects.
The Keep A Breast Foundation's commitment to reducing breast cancer risk worldwide through art, education, prevention, and action is exemplified by the GBG program. As the foundation approaches its 25th anniversary in 2025, initiatives like the Give Back Grant continue to play a crucial role in engaging diverse communities in health advocacy and inspiring breast health awareness globally. The impact of the GBG program extends beyond financial assistance, fostering a sense of community and support for BIPOC women navigating the challenges of breast cancer. By addressing the specific needs of this underserved population, the Keep A Breast Foundation is contributing to a more equitable landscape in breast cancer care and support. Those interested in supporting the Give Back Grant program can contribute through the GBG fundraising page, where 100% of every donation goes directly to recipients. Additionally, individuals can start personal fundraisers through the KAB Activists fundraising initiative to expand support for BIPOC women impacted by breast cancer.
