TRATON GROUP Posts 10% Q3 Unit Sales Gain, Fueled by 48% Surge at International Motors

The TRATON GROUP reported a 10% year-over-year increase in third-quarter 2026 unit sales to 78,900 vehicles, according to preliminary figures released October 12. The gain, which accelerated from 4% growth in the second quarter, was primarily driven by significantly stronger customer demand in the United States. For the first nine months of 2026, cumulative unit sales reached 230,400 vehicles, up 3% from the prior-year period.

The performance was led by International Motors, TRATON's U.S.-focused brand, which recorded a 48% year-over-year jump in third-quarter unit sales to 19,900 vehicles. That spike more than offset a decline in the first half of 2026, reflecting a strong recovery in U.S. customer demand. For the first nine months, International's unit sales rose 3% to 49,400 vehicles. The U.S. rebound matters for the broader commercial vehicle industry because it suggests fleet operators are resuming capital investments after a period of caution, a potential signal of freight-market stabilization.

Other TRATON brands delivered mixed results. Scania Vehicles & Services increased third-quarter unit sales by 3% to 22,100 vehicles, supported by the ramp-up of production at its new plant in Rugao, China, and Brazil's government-backed "Move Brasil" loan program. MAN Truck & Bus posted a slight 1% decrease to 24,500 units, as a positive truck business was offset by declines in buses and vans, though its nine-month sales remained 5% higher. Volkswagen Truck & Bus grew third-quarter unit sales by 5% to 12,500 vehicles, also aided by the Brazilian loan program, but its nine-month total slipped 1% due to a weak first quarter.

Electrification trends within the group were uneven. Total all-electric vehicle sales fell 6% in the third quarter to 770 units, but rose 29% over the first nine months to 2,670 units. Scania's electric sales jumped 55% in the quarter, MAN's rose 32%, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus saw a 375% increase to 40 units. International's electric sales, however, dropped 72% to 100 units. The mixed picture highlights that while electric adoption is growing overall, it remains volatile and concentrated in specific brands and regions.

For readers in the Long Beach area, a major U.S. port gateway for imported vehicles and commercial fleets, the strong International Motors performance could signal increased vehicle throughput and related economic activity. The Port of Long Beach handles substantial volumes of vehicles and parts, and a rebound in U.S. commercial vehicle demand may translate into higher shipments through the region, affecting logistics, dealerships, and service providers. The broader acceleration in TRATON's sales also suggests the commercial vehicle market is recovering from a slow start to 2026, which could influence hiring and investment decisions across the transportation sector.

TRATON GROUP, parent to Scania, MAN, International, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus, will publish its 9M 2026 Interim Statement on October 28, 2026. The report will be available at https://ir.traton.com/en/publications. More information about the company can be found at www.traton.com.
