Priced Out of Senior Engineers, More US Startups Are Hiring Remote Developers

As the demand for senior software engineers continues to outpace supply, many US startups are finding themselves priced out of the local talent market. According to a recent announcement from Acendeo, a nearshore staff augmentation company, a growing number of companies are turning to remote developers in Latin America to fill senior roles at a fraction of the cost.

The narrative that remote work is over is contradicted by data. As of 2025, remote days still account for about a quarter of US paid workdays, according to the source. While a White House memorandum in January 2025 mandated federal employees return to the office full-time, private companies did not follow suit. In late 2024, fewer than half of US workers said they would accept a full return to the office, indicating a persistent preference for remote flexibility.

Acendeo, a US-incorporated company, specializes in placing senior Latin American engineers with US companies. Their model allows engineers to embed with client teams within 10 days, with no lengthy master agreement or exclusivity, and no upfront recruiting fee. Rates are 30 to 40% below those of a comparable fully loaded US hire, making it an attractive option for startups that cannot compete with the salaries offered by major tech firms like MAANG (Meta, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google).

Brad Webb, Co-founder and CTO of Acendeo, explains: "The demand for Senior Engineers is not slowing down. A growing company cannot pay what the giants pay. That does not mean lowering the bar. It means hiring the same caliber where the math works." This approach emphasizes maintaining high standards while making cost-effective hiring decisions.

The need for senior developers is not anecdotal. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of software developers will grow 16% between 2024 and 2034, which is more than five times the average for all occupations. This growth, driven by AI, the Internet of Things, and automation, translates to about 129,200 job openings each year.

The strain is particularly acute at the senior level. The top 10% of US developers earn above $211,450 in base salary, and total packages at the largest tech firms climb well beyond that. Startups rarely win those bidding wars, prompting them to explore alternatives like nearshore hiring.

Acendeo's model also offers legal advantages. Because the company is US-incorporated, clients contract under US law, reducing their exposure to severance and labor claims in the Latin American countries where the engineers are based. Additionally, clients can request a replacement at no cost after the first 30 days, ensuring a good fit.

Nelso Villamizar, VP of Strategic Operations at Acendeo, highlights the importance of trust and speed: "Trust and speed decide this business. The client wants to hire abroad and keep the relationship under US law. Get that structure right, and it lasts years."

For startups looking to stay competitive without breaking the bank, Acendeo's nearshore model offers a viable solution. By leveraging senior talent from Latin America, these companies can access the expertise they need while maintaining financial sustainability.
