National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is advancing its service transformation with the introduction of a piece-based checked baggage policy, commonly known as the Piece Concept. The new policy will apply to tickets issued on or after September 1, 2026, for travel commencing on or after that date. Passengers with tickets issued before that date will retain their existing baggage allowance, even for journeys after implementation.
The shift from the previous weight-based system to a piece-based system marks a significant milestone. Under the new policy, checked baggage allowances are determined by the number of pieces and a maximum weight per piece. This provides passengers with greater clarity and certainty, offering allowances of up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, totaling up to 64 kilograms, depending on route, travel class, and fare category.
Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills emphasized that the change reflects the company's commitment to a modern, consistent, and transparent travel experience. "The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernize our services and provide passengers with greater certainty," Mills said. "Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily."
For domestic routes, Economy Class passengers will receive one checked piece up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each. On international routes, Economy Class passengers receive two pieces up to 23 kilograms each, and Business and First Class receive two pieces up to 32 kilograms each. Compared with the previous Weight Concept, allowances increase significantly: domestic Economy rises from 20 kg to 23 kg, domestic Business from 30 kg to 64 kg, and domestic First from 40 kg to 64 kg. International Economy increases from 30 kg to 46 kg, Business from 40 kg to 64 kg, and First from 50 kg to 64 kg. Some passengers may receive up to 34 kilograms of additional allowance.
The Piece Concept is widely adopted globally and is expected to standardize services, improve baggage handling efficiency, and provide certainty for passengers connecting to international networks.
