Dr. Wael Sakr, a prominent figure in pathology and medical education, has announced a new national scholarship initiative aimed at supporting undergraduate students who aspire to become medical doctors. The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students is now accepting applications from students across the United States who are on a pre-med track or otherwise pursuing a career as an MD or DO. The one-time award of $1,000 is designed to help a selected student manage educational expenses while continuing their path toward a medical career.
The scholarship reflects Dr. Sakr’s professional values, shaped by more than four decades in pathology, medical education, and cancer research. After completing his medical training at the University of Damascus in Syria, Dr. Sakr pursued postgraduate education in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990 and later served as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022. In 2022, he became Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His research has focused extensively on prostate cancer and racial disparities affecting African American men, and he has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.
Eligible applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduates at an accredited college or university and remain in good academic standing. They must demonstrate a genuine interest in medicine and submit a complete application, including a required essay, by the April 15, 2027, deadline. The essay, between 500 and 750 words, asks applicants to respond to the question: “Dr. Wael Sakr has spent his career advancing medicine through research, mentorship, and a commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. What draws you to a career in medicine, and how do you hope to make a meaningful impact as a future physician?” Applicants are encouraged to provide authentic responses that reflect specific experiences, challenges, or moments that have influenced their decision to pursue medicine.
The winner is scheduled to be announced on May 15, 2027, with notification provided directly by email. Applications should be sent to apply@drwaelsakrscholarship.com and must include the essay along with the applicant’s full name, school, expected graduation date, and contact information. The scholarship is intended to recognize promising undergraduate students wherever they study in the United States, rather than being restricted to a particular city or state.
This initiative matters because it addresses the rising costs of education and the need to support a diverse pipeline of future physicians. By encouraging students to articulate their motivations and aspirations, the scholarship highlights the importance of thoughtful, academically committed individuals entering the medical field. For Long Beach and surrounding areas, which are home to several colleges and universities, this national opportunity could benefit local students who are eager to make a difference in healthcare. As healthcare disparities persist, supporting aspiring physicians who are committed to service and research is a step toward a more equitable system.
