The 43rd Baidui Cup youth football tournament in Beijing concluded with over 20,000 participants and a new two-track system, highlighting its evolution from a local event to a model for youth football development.

The 43rd "Baidui Cup" Football Tournament, a cornerstone of youth sports in Beijing, has concluded with record participation, drawing over 20,000 young players and 1,481 teams. Established in 1984, this year's event introduced a pioneering "two-track" system, separating participants into Popularization and Competitive groups, marking a significant evolution in China's youth football landscape.

The Popularization Group, open to all young enthusiasts, emphasized "joyful participation and free team formation" across 14 age categories, from six-year-olds to high school students. In the youngest division, no rankings are recorded, and every participant receives an award, aiming to foster a love for the sport and expand the grassroots base. The Competitive Group, designed for professional club youth academies, sports schools, and school teams, spans 10 age categories from 8 to 17, providing a high-level platform to refine talent selection mechanisms.

A representative from the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau highlighted that the two-track system signifies the Baidui Cup's transformation from a standalone amateur event into a comprehensive youth tournament system that equally values participation and excellence. This model offers a valuable framework for enhancing youth football competitions nationwide.

The tournament also featured notable figures, including Fu Ming, an international referee who officiated at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, who took charge of Competitive Group matches and encouraged young players to "win on the condition that you enjoy the game." Shao Jiayi, the tournament's image ambassador and head coach of the Chinese men's national football team, presented awards and urged children to compete with courage.

For many Beijing residents, the Baidui Cup is more than a tournament; it is a cherished summer tradition. A post-80s football enthusiast, who participated as a child and now coaches a team, described it as "Beijing's very own 'World Cup' for its children." The event has become a cultural touchstone, representing the city's sports identity and nurturing generations of players.

This year's record scale and innovative structure underscore the tournament's growing importance in China's youth sports ecosystem. By balancing widespread participation with elite competition, the Baidui Cup is not only providing opportunities for thousands of young athletes but also contributing to the nation's long-term football development strategy. As the event continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the enduring passion for football in Beijing and the commitment to cultivating future talent.
