Cork Supply has successfully concluded its Cork Harvesting events at California Polytechnic State University and the University of California, Davis, providing hands-on educational experiences about sustainable cork production to students, faculty, and industry professionals. The events, held on May 28th at Cal Poly and May 30th at UC Davis, focused on teaching participants about cork harvesting processes and the sustainability advantages of natural cork closures for wine and spirits. Peter Hladun, CEO of Cork Supply in North America, emphasized the company's educational mission, stating that natural cork represents "the most sustainable product a winemaker can choose to close their wine with."
University officials praised the initiatives, with Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong describing them as "unique Learn by Doing opportunities" and UC Davis Professor David E. Block noting that such experiences typically require international travel to Portugal. During the events, participants learned that corkwood is harvested from trees every nine years without damaging them, with cork trees living approximately 200 years and supporting multiple harvests throughout their lifespan. The harvesting process occurs primarily by hand from June through August, with cork harvesters working in pairs in what is considered one of the highest-paying agricultural jobs globally.
Building on these educational events, Cork Supply has launched an international scholarship program that will send 10 students from seven different countries to Portugal to witness cork harvesting firsthand, learn about production processes, and network with peers from similar programs. Greg Hirson, Global Director of Innovation for Cork Supply, explained that the scholarship program "complements the cork bark harvest events" and demonstrates the company's "deep commitment to building knowledge, awareness, and appreciation for cork." The first group of scholarship winners traveled to Portugal in late June, with more information available at corksupply.com/us.
These initiatives form part of Cork Supply's "Harvesting for the Future" strategy, which encompasses various sustainability efforts including greenhouse gas emissions reduction, efficient raw material use, and innovative applications for cork manufacturing by-products. By providing hands-on experiences and educational opportunities, the company aims to promote sustainable practices while nurturing the next generation of wine industry professionals. These programs have the potential to shape future industry decisions regarding sustainable practices and wine closure choices, potentially influencing long-term sustainability efforts and wine quality standards as the industry continues to evolve.
