The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to finding a cure for multiple myeloma through its annual Road to Victories cycling event. On August 24, 2024, a team of 18 cyclists, including six multiple myeloma patients, embarked on a challenging 250-mile journey through California's Wine Country, raising over $110,000 for critical research and patient support. Multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer, affects plasma cells in the bone marrow and can spread throughout the body. The MMRF, as the largest nonprofit organization focused solely on accelerating a cure for this disease, utilizes events like Road to Victories to drive research, increase awareness, and provide essential support for patients and their families.
Sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, the 2024 Road to Victories program took participants through scenic routes in Sonoma, Napa, Yountville, and Bodega Bay. The journey included breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast, rides along the Russian River, and a traverse through the Armstrong Redwoods State Preserve. This challenging course not only tested the physical endurance of the riders but also symbolized the perseverance required in the fight against multiple myeloma. Michael Andreini, President and CEO of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that this team represents the community and demonstrates that together, they are fueling progress and driving cures. The diverse group of participants, including patients, family members, healthcare providers, and supporters, exemplifies the collaborative effort needed to combat this disease.
Rob Bultje, Regional Business Director at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, described the Road to Victories as more than just a bike ride but rather an unforgettable and life-changing experience. He highlighted the emotional and mental strength gained by participants, underlining the event's impact beyond fundraising. The success of this year's Road to Victories adds to the MMRF's impressive track record. Since its inception, the foundation has raised over $600 million for research, opened nearly 100 clinical trials, and helped bring more than 15 FDA-approved therapies to market. These efforts have contributed to tripling the life expectancy of myeloma patients.
The MMRF's commitment extends beyond research funding. The organization is dedicated to advancing health equity, ensuring that all myeloma patients can benefit from scientific and clinical advances. This holistic approach to tackling multiple myeloma demonstrates the MMRF's comprehensive strategy in fighting the disease. As the MMRF continues its mission, events like Road to Victories play a crucial role in maintaining momentum in the fight against multiple myeloma. The funds raised will support ongoing research initiatives, patient education programs, and community support services. The success of the 2024 Road to Victories cycling event serves as a powerful reminder of the progress being made in multiple myeloma research and treatment. It also highlights the ongoing need for support and funding to continue this vital work. As the MMRF pushes forward in its quest to find a cure for every multiple myeloma patient, events like these provide hope and tangible results for those affected by this challenging disease.
